Mulder and the Lone Gunmen infiltrate the clinic/research facility. Inside, Mulder encounters additional Crawfords and realizes Kurt is a clone. He believes Fenig was abducted from the aircraft by being sucked out of the emergency exit door. However, Go-Team members find Fenig's body amongst the debris field. Louis Frish manned the Air Force Reserve air control tower on the night of the crash. He tells the agents an unidentified radar blip enter Flight 549's airspace. Moments later, there was an explosion. Mulder speculates that a third, unidentified aircraft shot down the intercept craft-but is at a loss to explain the absence of a second crash site. Back in DC, Scully and Frish await a federal marshal at the Headless Woman's Pub. Garrett, an evil government conspiracy guy, enters, tries to shoot Frish, and hits Agent Pendrell (the guy with a long-running crush on Scully), who happened to be frequenting the bar. Scully manages to shoot Garrett in the leg. After examining a map, Mulder concludes that the second craft crashed into Great Sacandaga Lake. He scuba dives into the murky water, where he encounters twisted wreckage-and the body of a gray alien. Suddenly, a bright beam of light emanates from the surface. To Be Continued... 90 - "MAX" #4X18 Pt. 2 of 2; aired 03/23/97 Mulder is placed under military arrest after he discovers the existence of a UFO crash site and Scully mourns the loss of Agent Pendrell. Records reveal that Sharon Graffia is not Max Fenig's sister, but an unemployed aeronautical engineer who spent time in mental institutions (where she met Fenig). The agents search Fenig's mobile home and discover a videotape in which Fenig states that the military salvaged alien technology for use in their own technological applications. He claims to have undeniable, irrefutable proof to back up his assertion. Mulder describes the sequence of events that (he believes) led to the downing of Flight 549: Max boarded the plane carrying physical proof of the existence of extraterrestrial life. Someone followed him aboard the craft, intending to obtain the object at any cost. But before the assassin could carry out his plot, Flight 549 was intercepted by a UFO. As the UFO began to abduct Fenig, flight controllers ordered a military jet into 549's airspace on a mission to destroy the alien craft. When the Air Force shot down the UFO, the airliner, caught in its "tractor beam," spun out of control and crashed. The manager of the trailer park where Fenig lived gives Mulder Fenig's undelivered mail. One envelope contains a luggage claim ticket bearing a three-letter designation for Syracuse. Sharon Graffia admits she stole an object from her employer after Max insisted it could prove the existence of alien life. The object was divided into three parts. Max and Sharon each took a segment, but they were later confiscated. Mulder finds the third piece inside Fenig's luggage at the Syracuse airport. He boards a flight for Washington, but is followed by Garrett (Agent Pendrell's killer). 91 - "SYNCHRONY" #4X19 The agents search for answers when an elderly man uses a technology of the future to commit murder. The elderly man is attempting to alter the future so his younger self never creates a special freezing compound. A dumb episode. 92 - "SMALL POTATOES" #4X20 In Martinsburg, West Virginia, the agents search for a man who possesses the ability to change form. They first learn about it through a story in a tabloid newspaper about a baby born with a tail. The loser who can shape shift assumes Mulder's face and tries to romance Scully. 93 - "ZERO SUM" "4X21 Skinner covers-up the death of a young woman who was attacked by a swarm of bees. It turns out Skinner has made a deal with the devil (as seen in episode 86 - "Memento Mori"): he hid evidence in order to get help from the Cigarette-Smoking Man. Using larvae taken from a honeycomb in the bathroom where the woman was killed, FBI scientist Valdespino hatches more bees to identify the species. The insects unexpectedly swarm the entomologist, killing him. Mulder later discovers that Valdespino died from smallpox. He hypothesizes that someone has engineered a method of spreading the contagion using the insects. 94 - Elegy The agents suspect a mentally-disturbed man is connected to the deaths of several girls whose spirits attempted to make contact with the living. Angie Pintero, the working-class owner of a bowling alley, discovers a badly-injured blond girl wedged inside a pinspotter carriage. The girl attempts to speak, but no words come out of her mouth. Angie notices police in a nearby parking lot and rushes outside to get help. He realizes a crowd has gathered around the dead body of the same girl he saw only moments earlier in the bowling alley. Mulder suspects that Angie encountered the dead girl's ghost. Scully uses a rest room to attend to a (cancer-related) nose bleed. There she encounters the spirit of another blond girl. Moments later, Mulder relays word that the body of yet another victim was found nearby. 95 - Demons Mulder becomes the prime suspect in an apparent double homicide. Mulder awakens in a motel room, sweating profusely, his hands and shirt stained with blood, and doesn't remember how he got that there. Scully helps him investigate and they learn he and the dead couple had been seeing Dr. Charles Goldstein, a psychiatrist, in an effort to recover suppressed memories. Mulder wanted to remember what happened to his sister. 96 - Gethsemane - Season finale, part 1 of 3 In flashback, anthropologist Arlinsky discovers in Canada the body of a gray alien perfectly preserved in ice. Going to examine ice core samples, Scully is thrown down a flight of stairs by an unidentified attacker. Fingerprints show the attacker was Michael Kritschgau, who works for the Pentagon's research division. Scully arrests Kritschgau but he warns that if he is taken to jail, the same people who gave Scully cancer will kill him. Scully arranges a meeting so Mulder can hear Kritschgau's story firsthand. The assassin, Ostelhoff, shoots and kills Arlinsky at the warehouse. Kritschgau tells the agents that the government has been orchestrating an elaborate hoax to divert attention away from itself. The corpse, Kritschgau claims, was forged from bio-materials and frozen into place over the course of a year. He insists Mulder was only meant to see the alien--to make him believe the lie. Scully tells him the men behind the hoax gave her cancer all in an effort to make him a believer in their lies. Mulder is stunned by the revelation. Back in the current day, Scully tells FBI officials that Mulder has died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. To Be Continued... "ESSENCE" 8 x 20 Original Air Date: 05/13/01 Frances Fisher plays a nurse with dubious motives in Part 1 of a gripping two-part season finale in which alien abductee Billy Miles (Zachary Ansley) resurfaces. Later, they encounter Billy, who's clearly not the man he once was. "EXISTENCE" 8 x 21 Original Air Date: 05/20/01 The eighth-season finale concludes with Scully giving birth. If only it were that simple. For starters, Doggett is the only one who knows where Scully, with the help of Reyes (Annabeth Gish), has gone to deliver her baby: an abandoned Georgia town with no heat or running water. Back at the FBI, Krycek (Nicholas Lea) tells one story, while Doggett hears another about the entity named Billy Miles. So Doggett, Skinner and Mulder try to figure out who's who — and who's aligned with whom. Meanwhile, Reyes manages to clean up Scully's temporary ghost-town home, where lacking boiled water is the least of their problems. Season Nine November 11, 2001: Nothing Important Happened Today, Part 1: The ninth-season opener continues to probe the mystery of Scully's baby, William. Integral to the storyline may be guest star Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess), who makes a provocative entrance in the two-part episode as a woman involved in the death of an EPA official. The premiere also introduces Cary Elwes as FBI A.D. Brad Follmer, an old flame of Reyes who advises her to abandon Doggett and his investigation of Deputy Director Kersh (James Pickens Jr.). And Follmer isn't the only one questioning the case, as Doggett learns he's missing not only key evidence but also key allies. But he'll only talk to Mulder, a risk Scully sees as too great. Distrustful of both Skinner and Follmer, Scully circumvents the FBI's investigation into the kidnapping and undertakes her own, assisted by Reyes and the Lone Gunmen. April 7, 2002: Improbable: Burt Reynolds plays an enigmatic man acquainted with a serial killer Reyes suspects is driven by numerology. April 14, 2002: Scary Monsters: An FBI accountant (Agent Leyla Harrison, last seen in "Alone" 8x19) talks Doggett and Reyes into investigating a boy's claim that monsters killed his mother, who was officially determined to have stabbed herself repeatedly. 04/21/02: "Jump the Shark" - The final episode of the unsuccessful X-Files spinoff show, The Lone Gunmen, ended with a cliffhanger. This episode resolves that story. When Morris Fletcher returns to haunt the Gunmen, the three amigos go searching for Yves Harlow's hidden background -- with a little help from their old pal, Jimmy. All regulars from The Lone Gunmen guest star. 04/28/02: "William" - Doggett confronts and subdues a grotesquely disfigured man lurking in the X-files office who explains that he is seeking out information for Agent Mulder. Scully is skeptical of the man's motives, but when an examination indicates his DNA matches that of the long-missing Mulder, Scully is horrified to think this could be her former partner. David Duchovny directed. Chris Carter wrote the teleplay from a story he created with Duchovny and Frank Spotnitz. 05/05/02: "Release" - A mysterious FBI trainee with the uncanny ability to accurately profile serial killers connects a recent group of murders to the killing of Doggett's son. Old wounds are reopened as Doggett grapples with his still-raw feelings about the death of Luke. X-Files WGA intern Jared Poe guest stars as the Quantico student whose insight torments Doggett. 05/12/02: "Sunshine Days" - A mysterious death leads Agents Scully, Doggett and Reyes to a seemingly quiet suburban neighborhood and a man who is driven by his obsession with "The Brady Bunch." 05/19/02: "The Truth" - The two-hour series finale, written by series creator Chris Carter. David Duchovny (unseen in season 9 until this episode) returns as Agent Mulder, who is on trial for murder. The trial leads to a military tribunal at which he is forced to save his own life as well as justify the existence of the X-files and extraterrestrials. That's it! No more! 200 episodes is enough. As I write this in 2002, word is out that the next X-Files movie is being planned. But the TV show is over over over.
